Preparing for Herschel Grammar
Herschel Grammar School is a co-educational state grammar in Slough. It is one of the most popular grammar school choices for families across Maidenhead, Windsor and the Royal Borough, with a strong academic record and good transport links.
The entrance examination
Herschel uses the Slough Consortium 11+ Test, which is shared across the four Slough grammar schools (Herschel, Langley, Upton Court, and St Bernard's). The test takes place in September of Year 6.
The Slough Consortium test typically consists of:
- Mathematics
- English (comprehension and grammar)
- Verbal reasoning
- Non-verbal reasoning
Each subject area carries a defined weighting in the overall score. Children typically need to score in the top portion of applicants to be offered a place at Herschel specifically, as the school is consistently oversubscribed.
What strong preparation looks like
Herschel preparation is broadly similar to other 11+ preparation, but with some specific considerations:
- Mathematics — Slough Consortium maths tends to focus on application rather than abstract problems. Word problems, multi-step reasoning, and practical maths are common.
- English — comprehension questions reward careful reading and inference. Grammar questions test the curriculum's expectations for end of KS2 — punctuation, parts of speech, sentence structure.
- Verbal reasoning — Slough uses bespoke verbal reasoning rather than GL or CEM. Familiarity with the specific style is helpful.
- Non-verbal reasoning — visual pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, sequences.
Because Slough's test is less widely publicised than the Buckinghamshire or Reading tests, generic 11+ practice papers can be misleading. We work with materials specifically aligned to the Slough Consortium format.
Catchment and admissions
Herschel uses a combination of distance from the school and qualifying score to determine admissions. Families closer to the school have priority, but a qualifying score is still required.
For Windsor and Maidenhead families, Herschel is realistic but not guaranteed even with a strong score. We recommend treating Herschel as one option in a broader strategy rather than the only target.
When to start
September of Year 5 is the typical starting point. Earlier preparation is rarely needed, although strong reading habits from younger ages make a substantial difference.
